Project rationale
Academic research is critical to keep teachers informed and to help them take evidence-informed teaching decisions. However, there is a tremendous gap between what research offers and how that can be transferred into concrete teaching ideas and strategies that they can use in the classroom to improve students’ learning. This happens because the voices of teachers are absent from the decisions taken by educational researchers. Hence, it is crucial that teachers’ voices are heard by playing a greater role in making research meaningful and useful for their own classroom practice.
In the case of Chile, teachers primarily access research through conference attendance where research is not necessarily presented in easily-understandable and contextually-situated ways. Indeed, it is unknown how much of that research is meaningful and practical to inform their teaching. Due to the social and detrimental working conditions of Chilean EFL teachers, they rarely have the time and the financial means to consume, critically analyse, and implement research in their language classrooms. Therefore, this project will serve as a bridge to provide teacher-members of RICELT access to cutting edge international ELT research, that would be critically considered in the light of Chilean classroom realities and contextualized for the Chilean language classroom setting.
